Living a relaxed, comfortable, and open-minded life is a good way to prolong life.

Faced with heavy work and life pressures, more and more middle-aged men feel overwhelmed, stressed, and helpless. Some even resort to negative attitudes, such as alcoholism, gambling, and drug use, to seek relief. Have you considered changing your lifestyle? Therefore, we offer the following suggestions for middle-aged men:

(1) Learn to confide in others

When faced with difficulties, men either suppress their problems or seek mental stimulation. These methods not only fail to solve the problems but may also increase the risk of illness. Therefore, middle-aged men should be willing to confide in their wives and friends to relieve psychological stress.

(2) Re-examine your life

Many men believe that if they lose their jobs, they will lose face and be unable to stand in society, which creates invisible pressure. In reality, life offers many choices; all roads lead to Rome. While God closes a door, He always opens a window.

(3) Learn to give up appropriately

In real life, the standard by which a man is measured is often the success of his career, especially for middle-aged men. However, this doesn't mean a man should always act according to this standard. For example, when he is sick and temporarily leaves his post, he should learn to relax and let go when necessary. Appropriate relinquishment is not equivalent to incompetence.

(4) Keep your body in optimal condition

Men often neglect their health, and even when they are sick, they frequently use self-comforting methods to postpone seeing a doctor. In fact, only by keeping the body in optimal condition can one have a good mood and be healthier in both body and mind.

(5) Maintain harmonious family relationships

In life, the strongest support for men usually comes from their partners. Disharmony in the family can leave men feeling trapped, both internally and externally, naturally casting a shadow on their psyche. By truly acknowledging their spouse as their other half and sharing the burdens of family and life, men may find it easier and more comfortable to live.

The renowned Chinese poet Zang Kejia deeply felt that a broad-minded and joyful spirit can ward off illness and prolong life. He believed that "with the doors of the mind wide open, one's emotions are relaxed and cheerful." Life is always full of ups and downs, and the journey is always arduous. It is impossible for a person's life to always be smooth sailing, always satisfactory, and always going as planned. One must have a broad-minded heart, be able to find happiness within oneself, and expel all negative emotions such as depression, frustration, jealousy, grief, and hatred from the heart, enjoying inner peace and strength.

A statistical analysis of data from 200 people aged 70-135 from ancient and modern times, both in China and abroad, revealed that 87.5% of them had a healthy mindset, ranking first among 21 longevity factors. Ancient people believed that "to be free from illness, one must first rectify one's mind." The *Huangdi Neijing* states, "Tranquility and emptiness allow true qi to flow; when the spirit is guarded internally, how can illness arise?" Modern medical research has proven that all organs and tissues in the human body are regulated and controlled by the brain's nervous system. When the mind is healthy, this regulation enhances the body's immunity and disease resistance, thus prolonging life.

Therefore, starting from middle age, men should learn to cultivate the psychological characteristics of long-lived elderly people:

(1) Optimistic and open-minded

Most centenarians are broad-minded, peaceful, warm-hearted, enjoy their work, are helpful, and remain calm in the face of adversity. They live freely, easily, and without pressure. This proves that "a narrow mind leads to many worries; a broad mind brings happiness; and happiness keeps illness away."

(2) Wide range of interests

Most centenarians have hobbies and a wide range of interests, such as gardening, raising fish, playing musical instruments, calligraphy, painting, stamp collecting, writing, and fishing by the river. A fulfilling life helps them find joy and forget their worries, and it also exercises the brain and all organs of the body, thus slowing down the aging process.

(3) Love life

Many centenarians possess the ambition and vigor of an old horse still eager to gallop a thousand miles, displaying boundless energy and vitality. This is primarily due to their love of life and family. They read books and newspapers daily, keeping pace with the times, and have something to do every day, providing them with spiritual sustenance. Moreover, they maintain a relatively scientific lifestyle, with regular daily routines, sufficient sleep, and a harmonious relationship with nature, achieving a balance between humanity and the natural world. A love of life is beneficial to health and longevity.

(4) Contentment brings happiness

Studies have shown that excessive desires inevitably lead to frequent disappointment, psychological imbalance, and negatively impact health and longevity. In contrast, centenarians often possess a contented and joyful mindset. They understand that a day is a day, whether happy or unhappy, so why not live each day happily? Therefore, they are realistic and never demanding of themselves or others. This kind, peaceful, and contented mindset allows their body and mind to maintain a long-term balanced and regular state with their environment, paving the way for health and longevity.

(5) Control your grief and anger

Life is not always smooth sailing; we may encounter various setbacks, frustrations, and even disasters, which can naturally cause anger. However, long-lived elderly people are able to control their anger, accept things as they are, think things through, and have a long-term perspective. They are self-reliant and strive to overcome adversity.
