I. Why is it necessary to "focus on men's health"?
Human society is composed of both men and women, and men's health is crucial to human development. In the past, men's health issues did not receive the same widespread attention as women's health. When discussing family planning, people tended to focus on women as the "target population," neglecting the role men play in family planning, reproductive health decisions, and behaviors. With the development of population and family planning work in my country, and the increasing influence of social, economic, and cultural factors on families and reproductive health, raising awareness of men's participation in family planning and their responsibilities can no longer remain just a slogan.
We are now focusing on men's health and advocating for a holistic approach to health, encompassing physical health, mental health, and social resilience. We should continuously strengthen public awareness campaigns regarding men's physical health, ensuring that the entire society cares about men's physical well-being. Simultaneously, we must also pay attention to men's mental health and their ability to cope with social pressures. In today's rapidly developing society and economy in my country, social life has a significant impact on men's mental health, as they face pressure from family, employment, and society. Poor mental health can easily lead to poor physical health.
Therefore, starting in 2000, we launched a men's health education and awareness campaign. This campaign addressed men's participation in family planning and their reproductive health, organically combining the promotion of husbands' responsibility in family planning, resolving men's confusion and doubts about reproductive health, creating a happy and harmonious married life, and improving the quality of family life. We conducted a series of large-scale social outreach activities, vigorously promoting and popularizing scientific knowledge about men's health, calling on the whole society to care about men's health, and urging men to consciously shoulder their responsibilities to their families and society, as well as their responsibilities in production, life, reproduction, and eugenics. This initiative generated a strong response in society.
II. Background of the "Men's Health Day" Publicity Campaign
In 2000, to strengthen the dissemination of popular science knowledge on population and family planning, further promote the "New Marriage and Childbearing Customs Enter Every Household" campaign, and to popularize scientific knowledge about husbands' responsibility in family planning and male reproductive health among the general public of childbearing age, our company launched a pilot program for male health education in sixteen cities across the country (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chongqing, Harbin, Shenyang, Dalian, Qingdao, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Fuzhou, Zhengzhou, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Xi'an). We decided to hold a centralized publicity campaign on October 28, 2000, in these cities, themed "Focusing on Male Reproductive Health and Male Participation in Family Planning," as "Men's Health Day." On October 28, a spectacular scene unfolded in the sixteen pilot cities, with millions of people of childbearing age directly participating in this social publicity campaign, creating a powerful public opinion atmosphere and momentum, and establishing a positive social image for the family planning cause. Practice has proven that this public welfare campaign aligns with the overall requirements of the National Population and Family Planning Commission's work on population and family planning in the new era. It has enriched and expanded the form and content of the "New Marriage and Childbearing Customs Enter Every Household" campaign, hit the pulse of social development and people's living needs, and achieved remarkable public awareness results.
Building on the success of the pilot program for men's health education and awareness in 2000 and the "Men's Health Day" campaign, the program was expanded nationwide in 2001.
Since 2001, the General Office of the National Population and Family Planning Commission has issued a "Notice on Carrying Out Activities for Men's Health Promotion Day" every year and determined the theme of the activities.
1. The theme of the 2001 event was "Men's Health and Civilized Families." Using urban and rural population schools as a platform, the event aimed to promote and popularize scientific knowledge about reproductive health to the general public, provide reproductive health services, encourage men's participation in family planning by focusing on men's health, advocate for husbands' responsibility in family planning, and promote family civilization and progress.
2. The theme of the 2002 event was "Focus on Men's Health, Husbands' Responsibility for Family Planning." The aim was to disseminate scientific knowledge, establish scientific, civilized, healthy, and progressive concepts of marriage and childbearing; advocate for male participation in family planning to promote family civilization and happiness and improve the quality of family life; and address the practical problems and difficulties that men expect to solve, thus keeping pace with social development and people's needs and striving for better social publicity results.
3. The theme of the 2003 event was: "Caring for Men's Health, Popularizing Scientific Knowledge." In today's my country, with its deepening reform and opening up and rapid economic and social development, men face pressure from family, employment, and society. Caring for men's health means advocating a "holistic health" concept, focusing on men's physical and mental health and their social resilience. It addresses men's concerns and anxieties regarding family planning, reproductive health, mental well-being, and social resilience, aiming to create harmonious and fulfilling married lives and improve the quality of family life. This event aimed to widely promote and popularize scientific knowledge about male reproductive health, including sexual dysfunction, sexual psychological disorders, prevention of sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS, and infertility, through a series of large-scale social outreach activities. It called on the whole society to care for men's health and urged men to consciously shoulder their responsibilities to their families and society, as well as to production, life, reproduction, and eugenics.
4. The theme of the 2004 event was "Focusing on Men's Health, Improving Quality of Life." The "Men's Health Day" campaign was integrated into the overall plan and activities of "New Marriage and Childbearing Customs Entering Every Household," utilizing various forms to carry out diverse and engaging public awareness and service work, attracting men to participate and raising their awareness of their responsibility to participate in family planning. Using urban and rural grassroots communities and population schools as platforms, relevant knowledge about reproductive health was disseminated to the general public, providing reproductive health services to people of reproductive age, especially men, helping them overcome unhealthy lifestyle habits, and improving their reproductive health and the quality of family life. By focusing on men's reproductive health, the campaign aimed to promote family civilization, happiness, and progress. The National Population and Family Planning Commission and the Shanghai Population and Family Planning Commission jointly conducted a large-scale service and publicity campaign, the "Men's Health Tour," and an expert seminar on men's health education in Shanghai.
Over the years, various large-scale social publicity activities have been carried out across the country around the theme of Men's Health Awareness Day. These activities have received widespread attention from all sectors of society and the news media, and have been welcomed and actively participated in by the general public, creating a strong public opinion atmosphere and achieving excellent social publicity results.
III. Various social publicity activities will be carried out across the country around the theme of the event.
Across the country, local authorities will combine their local realities with activities centered around the theme of "Men's Health Awareness Day" to create a powerful social publicity campaign and a conducive public opinion environment. Family planning commissions at all levels will strengthen collaboration with departments such as publicity, health, culture, radio and television, and mass organizations to conduct a variety of diverse social publicity activities, including holding men's health training courses and exhibitions, providing men's health consultations and guidance, distributing promotional materials, and organizing newspaper columns, television and radio lectures.
The China Population Culture Promotion Association will continue to summarize and promote the pilot projects for male health education in communities, ensuring that this activity truly reaches the community, enters families, serves the public, encourages male citizens to participate in family planning, popularizes scientific knowledge, and builds happy families.
