prostate stones

Prostatic calculi are stones that form within the acini and ducts of the prostate gland. They are related to factors such as chronic prostatitis, prostatic fluid retention, ductal stenosis, and metabolic disorders. Inorganic salts such as calcium oxalate, calcium phosphate, and magnesium phosphate deposit on amyloid bodies, epithelial cells, and inflammatory exudates within the prostatic acini to form stones.

Causes of disease

Prostate stones are often discovered at the same time as patients with chronic prostatitis. Therefore, it is believed that their occurrence may be due to the obstruction of the acinar duct caused by prostatitis, the retention of prostatic fluid in the glandular cavity, and the reaction, precipitation, and accumulation of inflammatory secretions, exfoliated epithelial cells, inorganic salt crystals, etc. with the prostatic fluid to form stones.

What are the symptoms?

Most patients are asymptomatic, and symptoms only appear when they coexist with other diseases, such as chronic prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or urethral stricture.

Prostatic calculi complicated by chronic prostatitis can manifest as pain in the lower back, perineum, scrotum, penis, or anus. Anal pain worsens during defecation, and there may be discharge from the urethral opening. Pain intensifies with pressure on the perineum. If accompanied by posterior urethritis, urinary frequency, urgency, and dysuria may occur, sometimes with hematuria, especially terminal hematuria. When an abscess forms, symptoms such as fever, urinary retention, and perineal and rectal pain may occur.

When prostate stones are combined with benign prostatic hyperplasia or urethral stricture, symptoms such as difficulty urinating, urinary frequency, weak and thin urine stream, or even dribbling may occur. Since most patients with prostate stones are over 40 years old, these symptoms are quite common.
